THE FORGE RESIDENCY
A Forge resident is a person who enters into a 1-year commitment to learn and live God’s mission in his/her local context. The Residency is designed specifically for persons who already have full-time employment and will be remaining in their jobs. Forge also gladly welcomes full-time residents who want to commit one year of full time placement for the residency.
INTRODUCTION TO FORGE RESIDENCY
After the 1-year residency, a Forge resident will have
- An understanding of the Bible as the story of God’s mission
- An understanding of the Church as the community shaped by God’s mission
- An understanding of Discipleship as complete surrender to God and his mission
- An understanding of Leadership in new missional contexts
- An understanding of the local context and culture as the place of God’s mission
- An imagination to creatively innovate expressions of the above understandings
- Above all, a motivation to personally live out God’s mission and lead others to do the same.
Throughout the 1-year residency, Forge trains residents in the following 5 avenues:
- Three Intensive Courses | (3-5 days of intense teaching, reflection and formation)
- Cluster Nights | (every 4-6 weeks; includes entire cohort of residents)
- 1-1 Coaching | (designed to encourage self-discovery. Ideally a phone appoint every other week as well on a monthly or bi-monthly face to face coaching session)
- Collaborative Training | (learning while serving together with the cohort; 3-4x per year)
- Self-Directed Learning | (residents will choose a level and learn from a wide range of resources)
To successfully complete the Forge Residency, the resident must:
- Be actively involved in a faith community
- Constantly pursue living out God’s mission in his/her local context
- Attend all three intensive courses and complete assignments
- Attend 80% of Cluster Nights and Collaborate Trainings
- Be available for 1-1 coaching
- Find 3-5 prayer & encouragement partners to offer support throughout the year
- Blog (at least weekly) about learning, experiences, thoughts, etc
- Engage the Scriptures on a regular basis.
- Keep a Missional Imagination Prayer and Discernment Journal
FORGE RESIDENCY: THREE INTENSIVE COURSES

- Intensive #2: Spirituality, Sustainability & Discipleship
- Intensive #3: Developing Pioneering Leadership
MORE DETAILS
CLUSTER NIGHTS Cluster nights (approximately every 4-6 weeks; 6-10 p.m.) are designed to foster worship of God, develop community among the cohort, encourage spiritual formation of each resident, and provide group learning experiences. Meetings will take place at the home or ministry location of one of the cohort leaders or residents. Each meeting might include a meal, a time of worship, engagement with Scripture, prayer, and a missional training experience of some variety.
ONE-ON-ONE COACHING Each Forge resident will be assigned a coach. The coach will keep in touch with the resident on a regular basis and will plan on having a significant conversation with the resident at least every 3-4 weeks. The role of the coach will be to help the resident gain greater self-awareness and discovery. To help the resident achieve self-awareness, the coach will primarily seek to ask good questions and probe for well-formulated answers to those questions. It is important to note that the coach will not function as an expert, telling the resident exactly what to do or what to learn. Rather they will keep the value of action reflection learning.
COLLABORATIVE TRAINING Periodically throughout the year, the Forge team will plan serving events and experiences for the cohort of residents so participate in together. A time of debriefing will follow each event or experience.
SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING Throughout the residency, residents will be given assignments to complete on their own time. Often these assignments will ask the resident to choose one of many available resources (books, articles, podcasts, websites, etc) to review and evaluate. Forge partners with Shapevine, an online missional community resource center, for much of the self-directed learning assignments.
